Side effects
It is normal to experience muscles soreness for a few days following a deep tissue massage. Epson salt bath, heating pad or cold towel wrapped are known to help alleviate the soreness. Drinking water after the treatment will also help to flush the metabolic waste from the tissues. Although, massage therapy is generally safe but deep tissue may not be safe for everyone. Consult with your doctor before having a deep tissue massage if you have an underlying medical condition such as:
- High blood pressure
- Thrombosis or embolism
- Blood thinner medication usage
- Hemophilia
- Cancer or are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation
- Osteoporosis
- Pregnancy
- Open wound or skin infection
Keep in mind that therapist will always work with you in term of pressure to suit your pain tolerance. During the massage, you may experience some discomfort or pain in one area more than another. Pain does not necessarily mean the massage is good or effective. Pain above ones’ tolerance can cause the body to counteract, making it harder for the therapist to reach the deeper muscles. Therefore, it is always crucial to inform your therapist so he/she can make adjustment to better your treatment outcome.
